Micro Lesson 2
Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Subject(s): Writing
Topic of Study:
Time Allotment:
Standards:
3.RI.5 Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words,
sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic
efficiently.
2.4.c Use collaborative tools to expand students' authentic,
real-world learning experiences by engaging virtually with experts, teams, and
students, locally and globally.
Objectives: (What do you want the students to know or be
able to do?, I will be looking carefully
on how they align with your assessment)
SWBAT identify and use text features and search tools to answer
questions about the given topic and explain how these tools help their
understanding of the text.
Reflection: Assessing Prior Knowledge and Planning
Instruction
What do the students need to know prior to the lesson?
Students will need to have an idea of what text features are
and where they are found in the text.
How will prior knowledge and experience be assessed?
The prior knowledge will be assessed at the beginning of the
lesson by asking students about a YouTube video.
How will you use this information in the planning
process?
I will use this information to find out what students will
need further instruction and help throughout the lesson. I could partner with students who have high knowledge about the information with those who don’t.
When will the lesson be taught in the course of the
school year? Why?
The lesson can be taught at the beginning of the school year
or in the middle to refresh students about using these features to help their
understanding.
III. IMPLEMENTATION
Procedure: (Include a step-by-step description of what
the students and the teacher will be doing
(i.e. walk me through the lesson)
Go on YouTube and ask students what they think certain
videos are about. Ask them how they know what certain videos they are about and
how they know. After grabbing students’ attention tell them that today we are going
to be working on text features and search tools and how they are beneficial
to us as we are reading. Explain how this is not only useful in the classroom
but as we just saw using the internet as well.
After this give students a short nonfiction passage and help
students find different text features and have them answer questions about the
passage. Help students by reading the passage with them and trying to answer
questions with them and asking for volunteers. Allow students to work with their
partners to complete the worksheet. After completing the worksheet and
highlighting the text features have students take their tablets out and go to the website learning farm.
Have students go to the learning farm website and allow them
to explore the text features and tools lesson. Allow students to play the games
after listening to the lesson. After completing the games and practicing have
students complete the test mode.
Technology Integration: (Describe how students and the
teacher will use technology throughout
the lesson)
Students will see the use of technology at the beginning of
the lesson and then for their practice students will go to the learning farm
website and practice what they learned. Students will then complete the test
mode on the website to see what they have learned.
Differentiated Instruction: Describe how you will
differentiate the instruction for each of the
following:
Gifted
Allow students to write on their worksheet how the text
features help with their learning of the text.
ELL
Provide students with additional time to work with their
partners to complete the test mode.
Reflection: Designing Instruction (InTask Standards 7 and
8):
How do the instructional methods align with what you
know about best
practices (think about your methods classes)?
I think that the instructional methods align with the
practices because it allows the students to work with different websites which
provide them with different learning tools.
How are you engaging students in creative and higher
order thinking?
I think that I engage students in creative and higher-order thinking by using real-life examples like using YouTube an example.
IV. ASSESSMENT
Procedure: Read Assessing Student Learning (Include a
description of how you will determine
the students' success in meeting the standards and
objectives of the lesson (You must include
what artifacts and activities will be assessed as well as
a description of the assessment process))
The assessment would be the final test mode on the website
to show what students have learned and to assess those who need further help.
Instruments: (Include [or link to] any tools that you
will be using to assess your students (i.e..
rubric, checklist, worksheet, test)
