Global Digital Citizenship Scenario

 Student exposes school's dirty water

Senior Hazel Juco used her cellphone to post a video on her social media about the school's restroom faucet water that was yellow resembling urine. She was suspended for three days for inappropriate use of electronics other students posted similar photos to show solidarity which causes Jucos suspensions to be expunged. The school later fixed the broken pipe that was causing the problem.

The school claimed that this was an inappropriate use of electronics but if it is used as evidence of something wrong in the school I feel it is important to explain and inform students about Global Digital Citizenship. I think that parents could see how the school was functioning and the problems within the school. I think it shows how students lack power and they used the internet as a way to change the school in a positive way. Parents, teachers, and administrators should always take students' words into consideration and make it known that they hear the students. I think this incident should have been prevented immediately by the first student that complained about the water.

Nazi Chat Group (Facebook)

Multiple students from different schools in Boulder, Colo. area were involved in posting rape memes, messages about "white power" and comments about wanting to kill black and Jewish people.  One student who was involved committed suicide after the group chat was created. Teachers, parents, and administrators should take this very seriously especially since it has had a tragic outcome. Students in the group and out who may have been affected by it should receive counseling. Serious actions should be taken to get students to understand what they did is wrong. It is important to watch what our students or children are posting online and what their certain views of the world are.

  1. That story about the water is crazy, I agree with both sides on this one. I think the school should be aware of its problems and fix them if they don't want them to be exposed, you can't punish a student to an extreme for pointing out an issue. But I also think the student wasn't all in the 'right' maybe they shouldn't be 'calling out' their school so publicly?

    1. Hey Ana! That's a very interesting story. The school should definitely be aware of the situation and I'm not sure if I missed it but I would recommend the student try to communicate with the office first as they may be unaware of the situation. If nothing happens I would talk to my parents about the situation and see if they could try to communicate with the office as well.
