Micro Lesson
Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Subject(s): Reading & Writing
Time Allotment: 30 minutes
Standards:
3.RI.9 Compare and contrast the most important points and
key details presented in two texts on the same topic.
2.4 Collaborator
Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues
and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and
solve problems.
Objectives:
SWBAT compare and contrast the most important points between
texts by creating a compare and contrast map and answering kahoot questions
with a 90% accuracy.
Reflection: Assessing Prior Knowledge and Planning
Instruction
What do the students need to know prior to the lesson?
The students need to know what compare and contrast are and
how to use their tablets efficiently.
How will prior knowledge and experience be assessed?
At the beginning of the lesson, students will be asked to
compare and contrast an apple and a banana. I would help students by
giving hints like whether are they the same color and so on asking questions that might
help the student. After this, I can ask the students if they learned about
compare and contrast when they were in 2nd grade.
How will you use this information in the planning process?
I will use this information to see if students need an
overview or if they need to be retaught this concept.
When will the lesson be taught in the course of the
school year? Why?
This lesson will be taught at the beginning of the school
year to help students keep the information fresh from what they learned last
year and help make connections for this year.
IMPLEMENTATION
Procedure:
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will write on the
board a cat and a dog. Ask students what the similarities and the differences
are. Write what the students say on the board and then tell them that we are
going to be comparing and contrasting two different things. Ask
students if they can compare and contrast between an apple and a banana help
students by giving hints like the different colors and ask other questions that
might help students. Ask students if this sounds familiar like if they remember
this from 2nd grade to remind them of their prior knowledge.
Next, tell students that we are going to be doing the same
only with two different short stories. Read the stories with students, and after
reading provide an example of comparing the stories. After having
students use their tablets to go to the website readwritethink. Students will
use the compare and contrast map with their partners.
After having the students complete their maps ask students for
volunteers to have them share their answers for their maps. After completing
this ask students to go to Kahoot and have students answer a 5-question
assessment about what comparing, and contrasting is and what the story they
read is.
Technology Integration:
The students will work with partners to create a comparing
and contrasting map. The teacher will provide aid for students while navigating
the website. At the end of the lesson, students will also use the website Kahoot
to show their understanding of the lesson.
Differentiated Instruction: Describe how you will
differentiate the instruction for each of the
following:
Gifted
Ask students to not only compare and contrast the story but
also the characters and themes of the story.
ELL
Provide students with sentence frames.
Reflection: Designing Instruction (InTask Standards 7 and
8):
How do the instructional methods align with what you
know about best
practices (think about your methods classes)?
How are you engaging students in creative and higher
order thinking?
ASSESSMENT
Procedure:
The compare and contrast map and the Kahoot quiz will help
assess students learning to understand what they understand and what they still
need further help.
Instruments: (Include [or link to] any tools that you
will be using to assess your students (i.e..
rubric, checklist, worksheet, test)

The two texts
Hi Ana:
ReplyDeleteI like the activity that you used to grab the students’ attention. Using a banana and an apple was a great idea to teach compare and contrast. You gave them the opportunity to see and touch the fruits making it easier for them to comprehend the concepts.
